Learning Auslan

AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language) is the language of the Australian Deaf community and plays an important role within the inclusive culture of St Albans East Primary School.

As part of our commitment to inclusion and accessibility, AUSLAN is taught as our Language Other Than English (LOTE) program from Prep to Grade 6. All students and teachers participate in weekly AUSLAN lessons, developing communication skills while building an understanding and appreciation of Deaf culture and the experiences of Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

St Albans East Primary School is proud to host the Western Metropolitan Deaf Facility, supporting Deaf and hard of hearing students within our school community. The presence of the Deaf Facility provides authentic opportunities for students to use AUSLAN in meaningful everyday interactions, helping to foster genuine connections, inclusion, and mutual respect amongst students.

Students enjoy learning AUSLAN through engaging activities including games, storytelling, songs, conversations, and classroom interactions. The program encourages confidence in communication while promoting empathy, understanding, and awareness of the diverse ways people connect and communicate.

The teaching of AUSLAN and the integration of our Deaf Facility reflect our strong commitment to creating an inclusive environment where every student feels valued, supported, and connected. Through these opportunities, students develop important life skills that promote acceptance, respect, and community.

At St Albans East Primary School, we are proud of the way AUSLAN strengthens our inclusive culture and enriches learning experiences for all students.
