Visual Arts

At St Albans East Primary School students participate in Visual Arts lessons which involve students making and responding to artworks and drawing on the world as a source of ideas to develop their creative and expressive capacities. Students engage with and develop knowledge of visual arts skills, techniques and processes. They use a range of materials as they explore the different areas of art such as drawing, painting, construction, textiles, collage, modeling and printmaking. Students are both artists and audience in the Arts.

Learning in the Visual Arts helps students to develop an understanding of world cultures and their responsibilities as global citizens.

Self-Portraits

Students in grades 1/2/3/4 completed a drawing unit on Self-Portraits, focusing on the art elements of colour, shape and pattern.  Each year level focused on a famous artist or group of artists for inspiration: - Grade 1/2’s looked at Picasso and his abstract style of art and the Grade 3/4 ‘s looked at a group of artists known as the ‘Fauves’ focusing on their bold colour choices used in their artworks.  Students used the medium of paint slicks which are like paint sticks and permeant markers to draw and colour.

Bush Medicine

Students reflected on and drew ideas from the artwork of Indigenous artist, such as Rosemary Petyarre. Through a range of activities students explored the shapes, colours and appearance of leaves from local native trees. These are then developed conceptually by mark making and colour mixing through painting activities, and a collaged artwork.

Ideas – Exploration of artworks from other cultures, such as styles and symbols of Indigenous Australian and Asian cultures.
Skills – Artistic processes and techniques to explore visual conventions when making artworks: shape, colour, space and texture.
